Explanation:

It is true that vanity is evil. It may bring joy for a short period but ultimately it leads to ruin. Matilda, to get a little pleasure and to show her vanity, borrowed a diamond necklace to wear at the minister’s party. She lost it. Mr Lisle her husband took a big loan to replace it. For ten years both of them worked hard to repay the loan. Poor Matilda had to sacrifice her comfort, youth, softness and beauty. She became a crude, hard, poor lady with rough hair and hands. Later, the irony was Mrs Forester told her that it was a false diamond necklace only for 500 francs. If I were placed in such a situation, I would have told my friend the truth. I would have told her that I felt extremely sorry for losing it and would have assured her that I would replace it, only she should tell me where to get it from and how much it would cost.

Answer :-

It is true that vanity is a an evil. It may bring joy for short period but ultimately it leads to ruin.

As it was also shown in the story ' The Necklace' . Matilda who wants to live a luxurious life but because she was born in poor family she can't afford luxurious things. One day her husband came back from his office with the invitation letter in his hand . He thought that Matilda will feel very happy after seeing this letter but Matilda started crying after seeing the letter. When her husband asked her that why she was crying? she replied that she have nothing to wear in the party. After that , Her husband gave her some money to buy a beautiful dress but Matilda again started crying and started demanding for beautiful necklace then her husband replied to borrow necklace from her friend Madam Forestier. After taking necklace she had gone to a party she looks very pretty but when she came back she found that her necklace was lost. She thought that it was a diamond necklace . Mrs Matilda and her husband took a big loan to replace it . For 10 years both of them worked hard to repay the loan . Matilda had to sacrifice her comfort youth, Softness and beauty but at the last it is mentioned in the chapter that her friend told her that it was not a real diamond necklace and it cost was only 500 Frances .

If I were placed in a situation , I would have told my friend the truth that I lost her necklace and I feel extremely sorry for my mistake and I would assure that I would repay the cost of necklace as soon as possible .
