Let first number be M and other number be N.

☞ The sum of two numbers is 9.

=> M + N = 9

=> M = 9 - N __________(eq 1)

☞ The difference (subtract) of five times (times = multiply) the first number (M) and thrice (three times) the other number (N) is (equal to) 5.

A.T.Q.

=> 5M - 3N = 5

=> 5(9 - N) - 3N = 5

=> 45 - 5N - 3N = 5

=> - 8N = 5 - 45

=> - 8N = - 40

=> 8N = 40

=> N = 5

• Put value of N in (eq 1)

=> M = 9 - (5)

=> M = 4
