5. Thermometer is an instrument to measure the temperature of a given substance. The simplest
thermometer is the mercury in glass thermometer which is based on the thermal expansion of
mercury. Fahrenheit scale and the Celsius scale are the two scales used for measuring temperature.
We use a specially designed and calibrated thermometer to measure our body temperature. It is
calibrated from 35°C to 42°C only. This is so because this is the range over which the temperature of
the normal human body can vary. It has a slight 'kink' or 'bend' in its capillary tube which is called
constriction. The constriction ensures that mercury thread does not fall back, by itself.
Answer the following questions
a) Name the thermometer which is used to measure our body temperature?
b) What is the range of temperature in this thermometer?
c) What is the name given to the slight 'bend' or 'kink' in this thermometer?
d) Choose the scale which is used mostly to measure the temperature. (Fahrenheit/Celsius).
