5. two naturally occuring ores of copper are cuprite, cu,o, and tenorite, cuo. (a) give the oxidation state of copper in each ore. (b) copper can be extracted from tenorite by heating the ore with powdered carbon. (i) write an equation for this reaction. (ii) explain, in terms of electrons, why the copper in tenorite has been reduced.

Answer:

a) In cuprite the valency of Cu is +1 and in tenorite its +2.

b) yes it will reduce the oxide ore into the metal.

i) CuO(s) + C(s) → Cu(s) + CO2(g)

ii) copper in the ore was present as oxide ie it was sharing sharing electrons with oxygen but when carbon was introduced, carbon attached electrons of oxygen and left copper alone resulting its reduction.
