If they're happy tears or the story has a positive plotline in this phase

they could be tears of joy, the narrator is crashing because he is overwhelmed and on edge

or that could be sad smile with sad tears.

I doubt it's the latter tho

I think the narrator means that he us happy at on something which makes him emotional

He is hurt that is why ge said nothing and just smiled and cried itself..
