The current inside solenoid can be used to magnetize a material like soft iron when placed inside.The magnet so formed is called an electro magnet.
Differences :
An electro magnet's poles can be varied while permenant magnets have fixed poles
The current can be changed in an electromagnet but the current produced by a permenamt magnet can never be changed
Iron is soft and can be easily magnetised.So its used in the making of an electromagnet.
