In urban areas (towns and cities) land use could be housing or industry. Land use in urban areas in MEDCs varies from land use in urban areas in LEDCs. Urban land use use models attempt to simplify the way land is used in urban areas.

Landuse models contain zones showing their different functions. The main zones are:

• Central Business District – CBD

• Inner City

• Suburbs

• Rural Urban Fringe
