When carbon dioxide is passed through lime water, it turns milky due to the formation of calcium carbonate

Ca(OH)2(aq)+CO2(aq)→CaCO3(s)⏐↓+H2O(l)
Calcium carbonate precipitates as a milky white precipitate.
