Soapy wanted to go to the blackwell's island , which was a prison . He wanted to go and spend three months in the prison , so that he can escape from the harsh winter climate of New York where he lived in a park . He decided that he will have something to eat that is not really very expensive because he didn't want the restaurant people to feel any real anger towards him . Hence he convinced himself that he will go and eat in the brightly lit restaurant where rich people with crisp coat and suit will eat . He thought that above his knees he looked just fine with his thin coat and if no one notices his legs then he can get a clear entry to the restaurant . He would then say that he had no money . This way the restaurant people will call the police and he can go and live a peaceful life in the blackwell's island prison for 3 months until the winter gets completed . With this plan in his mind Soapy convinced himself to go inside the big restaurant .
