and George get up at six o’clock on the morning of the second day of the trip, as reported at the beginning of Chapter XI. They don’t have to be up this early; but neither one thinks it’s a good idea to go back to sleep. George remembers a time when his watch stopped and he ended up getting up and heading for the bank in the middle of the night. This is not the only waking-up story in the book. As Chapter V opens, the friends are awakened at nine o’clock, when they really wanted to get up at six in order to get an early start on the river trip. They’re evidently not good or consistent with personal time management.
