Long, long, ago, there were two old men lived in Russia. They were good friends, and had taken a Vow to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The two friends where as different from one another as chalk and cheese. Efim was well-to-do, serious and firm. He was hale and hearty, and had no bad habits whatsoever. He had a large family living with him. He was meticulous in his accounts. Though he was past sixty, his long beard was just beginning to turn grey. His friend Elisha was not so well off. Elisha had been a carpenter in his youth but now, he stayed at home earning some money through bee-keeping. He enjoyed singing and dancing and was fond of snuff. He was a kind and cheerful old man. He was quite short and dark with a curly beard and bald head. The two friends met one day outside the new Cottage that Efim was building. Soon, their talk turned to the vow they had made. Elisha was ready to undertake the Pilgrimage, but Efim was worried about a number of things --the new Cottage that he was building, about leaving the household affairs to his son and even about having enough money for The Pilgrimage. But in the end, Elisha persuaded him to go.
