Answer:
Beetroot was used as a type of lipstick in the 19th century.
Explanation:
Beetroot or Beta vulgaris is a root vegetable which was used widely in 19th century as a lipstick product. This was due to the presence of red pigments called betalains in the vacuoles of their cells. Betalains is a water soluble pigment which is widely used as food colouring agent. As betalains imparts red colour and because of its varying concentration it can give pink, reddish pink, and different shades of red therefore the women in the 19th century used beetroot as a source of lipsticks. Beetroot also moisturizes the lips and it has vitamin B12 that increases blood RBCs and makes blood more reddish.
