The poet describes the children running out like fowls in a farm yard when barley is scattering because when barley is scattered, all the birds come together to eat it. They don't think about anything else except eating the barley. Just like this, When the Piper blew his pipe a second time, all the children of Hamelin were out and started following the Piper until they reach to the high Koppelberg hill where all of them went inside and disappeared.
