We live in India, the largest democracy in the world. This means that in India, there is a rule of the people, by the people and for the people. There are many important requirements for a country to truly be democratic and the most important is Equality for its citizens. This means that everybody is equal in the eyes of law, without any discrimination on grounds of race, religion, gender, caste, class or birth.

Equality is so important because it preserves the “dignity” of an individual. Dignity means self-respect and the respect an individual deserves from others for being a fellow human being. It is an essential and basic human right. However, this ideal case doesn’t exist. Even today, many forms of inequality exist in India.

Equality In Indian Democracy. TheIndian Constitution recognizes every person as equal. This means that every individual inthe country male and female from all castes, religions, tribes and background are recognized as equal. In India the principle of theequality of all persons is recognised

Equality can only be achieved when one changes his attitude and starts treating every individual with respect and dignity.
The Indian constitution also gives all the adults the right to vote irrespective of their education, caste, wealth and religion. This is known as the universal adult franchise. The government in order to implement equality in the country, implements laws and schemes or programmes to improve the lives of people.

Though the Indian Constitution guarantees equality to all the Indians, religion, economic background gender and caste play an important role in the society. However, India is not the only country struggling for equality. In spite of the government implementing various measures to bring equality, several communities are still struggling for their dignity.
