Question;- 5 years ago a mother was 7 times as old as her daughter. 5 years hence, she will be 3 times as old as her daughter. Find their present ages.

Answer;-

Let the daughter's age before 5 yrs be x years.

.° . Mother's age before 5 yrs= 7x years

After 10 years (5±5), the daughter' age=(x±10)yrs

After 10 years, mother's age= (7x±10) yrs

As per condition,

=7x±10 = 3(x±10)

=7x±10 = 3x±30

=7x-3x = 30-10

=4x = 20

.°. =x = 5

Hence, the present age of the daughter=5±5

=10 years

and the present age of mother=7×5±5

=40 years
