M=4D-15 Eq 1

M+4=2.5(D+4)=2.5D+10

M=2.5D+6 Eq 2

Equating M from Eq 1 equal to M from Eq 2:

4D-15=2.5D+6

4D-2.5D=21

1.5D=21

D=21/1.5= 14 age of daughter now

M=4(14)-15=56–15=41 age of Mother now

Sum of their present ages=14+41=55 (answer)

Check:

Mother’s age 5 years ago=41–5=36=4 times daughter’s age of 9 years old 5 years ago= 4x9=36 ok

4 years from now, Mother will be 45 years old and she will be 2.5 times of daughter’s age of 18 years old 4 years from now=2.5x18= 45
