50 Ltr. of a certain liquid is confined in a piston system at the external pressure 100 atm. This pressure is
suddenly released and liquid is expanded against the constant atmospheric pressure, volume of the liquid in-
creases by 1 Ltr. and the final pressure of the liquid is 10 atm. Find the workdone.
(A) 1L.atm
(B) 5 L.atm
(C) 500 L.atm
(D) 50 L.atm

Answer:

The correct option is (A): 1L.atm

Explanation:

We know that the it is an an irreversible process because the pressure is released suddenly.

Now the pressure has become constant and the work is being done against the constant atmospheric pressure which is equal to 1 atm.

Thus  the increase in volume is also 1L. Therefore,

(Change in volume) ∆V = (51 - 50) = 1L

Atmospheric pressure "P"  =  1 atm

Work done is P∆V= 1L x 1 atm = 1L.atm

Thus the work done on the liquid is 1L.atm
