50 ml of alkaline water sample requires 5.2 ml of N/50 HCI upto
phenolphthalein end point and 15.4 ml for complete neutralization. Find
types of alkalinity?
P= 104 ppm & M= 308 ppm
P= 1040 ppm & M= 3080 ppm
P= 308 ppm & M = 104 ppm
P= 104 ppm & M= 204 ppm

Option (a)  P= 104 ppm & M= 308 ppm is the value of alkaliiy as calculated.

Explanation:

  • Alkalinity is determined by using the acid-base indicator phenolphthalein and methyl orange indicator.
  • We titrate the acid and base using these two indicators and measure the phenolphthalein and methyl orange indicator P and M respectively

Different cases of alkalinity are

Condition Hydroxide Carbonate Bicarbonate

P = 0               None           None              M

P = M                M           None              None

P = 1/2 M              None            M                      None

P < 1/2 M              None            2P              M – 2P

P > 1/2 M             2P – M   2(M – P)      None

Here the value of P =5.2ml and M =15.4 ml so

P < 1/2 M   None            2P     M – 2P so Carbonate and bicarbonate.

and the correct answer is Option (a)
