50% of the X-ray coming from a Coolidge tube is able to pass through a 0.1 mm thick aluminium foil. The potential difference between the target and the filament is increased. The thickness of the aluminium foil that will allow 50% of the X-ray to pass through will be
(a) zero
(b) < 0.1 mm
(c) 0.1 mm
d) > 0.1 mm

The correct answer is (d) > 0.1 mm.

EXPLANATION:

  • The accelerating potential between the target and the filament is increased. When this is done, the x-rays penetrating power also increases.
  • As a result of this, the x-ray fraction moving via the foil will also raise. It is provided that the x-rays same fraction will also be passing.
  • So, the aluminium foil’s thickness must be increased for maintaining the same x-ray fraction, which will keep the x-ray’s same fraction that will move through the foil.
