Tobacco was the major crop of Western India during 17th century.

The introduction of and the growth in the cultivation and trade in tobacco was the most interesting fact of seventeenth century in Indian economic history. A plant introduced from the new world, half way across the globe, rapidly acclimatized itself to Indian agricultural conditions and within few decades became a major cash crop of India.
