isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same atomic number but different mass number . isotopes of an element have the same atomic number because they contain the same number of protons isotopes of an element have different mass number because they contain different number of neutrons it is clear that the isotopes of an element differ in the number of neutrons in the nuclei .

ex -- chlorine atom contain 17 protons so the atomic number of some chlorine atom is 18 neutrons whereas other chlorine atom contain 20 neutrons .

each of two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei, and hence differ in relative atomic mass but not in chemical properties; in particular, a radioactive form of an element.
