Generally, if any substance is heated then it expands. when it cooled then it contracts. but if we heated water from 0°c to 4°c it contracts instead of expanding.hence the volume of water decreases as from 0°c to 4°c.if volume decreases, density will be increases as they are inversely proportional. normally when we increase temperature of any substance it's volume get increased. but about water it's full of contrasting between 0°c to 4°c water's volume get decreased and density get increased. as the density is maximum at 4°c.this property of water called as anomalous behaviour of water.
the above diagram shows the anomalous behaviour of water. water shows a unique property in between temperature 0°c to 4°c.in water has highest density at 4°c.
