Step-by-step explanation:

a)

x + y = 8

x - y = 2

Solve (1) & (2), we will get

x + y + x - y = 8 + 2

=> 2x = 10

=> x = 5

Place x = 5 in (1), we will get

x + y = 8

=> 5 + y = 8

=> y = 3

Hence, the values are x = 5 and y = 3.

b)

-2x + 4y = 22

2x + y = 13

solve (1) & (2), we will get

-2x + 4y + 2x + y = 22 + 13

=> 5y = 35

=> y = 7

Place y = 7 in (2), we will get

2x + y = 13

=> 2(x) + 7 = 13

=> x = 3

Hence the values are  x = 3 and y = 7
