The bottom of a ship is made heavy and thick . The reasons for such a construction and structure is as follows :-

▶ The pressure of any liquid increases with depth . This is one of the Laws of Pressure . Hence to withstand the high pressure the bottom of the ship has to be made thick , otherwise there will be damage in the bottom parts because of tremendous pressure .

▶ The centre of gravity of the ship will have to be kept below the centre of buoyancy in order to achieve equilibrium . Thus , the ship's bottom is made heavy . This ensures that the ship does not turn over .

▶ The ship is made heavy at the bottom so that its foundation is strong enough and it is well balanced . This is very safe because in storms , the ship needs to be strong enough to resist the storm . Otherwise if the foundation is not made strong . then the ship may turn over .

▶ The main reason for the ship to be made heavy is the increase in pressure with depth and that is why ships are made heavy at the bottom . It is for the same reason that dams are made thicker at the bottom . It is one of the Laws of Pressure and it states that pressure is directly proportional to the depth of the body . More the depth of the body , the more is the pressure and the less the depth , less is the pressure .

The bottom of a monohull sailboat - the keel - is made heavy so that as the wind blows over the sail, tipping the boat over, the weight of the keel provides a counteracting torque. Catamarans are stable because they have two widely-spaced hulls, not because the keel is heavy
