Definition :

Respiration is the process by which living cells an organism gains energy in the form of ATP by oxidizing nutrients resulting in the production of metabolic wastes .

MORE ON "Respiration".

↪ Respiration is a metabolic process which is a necessary process in living organisms .

↪ Respiration in humans start from the nose and the nasal cavity where the inhalation occurs . Air is taken inside the body .

↪ The function of the nose is that it moistens and warms the air .

↪ Then the air travels through the respiratory tract and travels all the way to the lungs where diffusion of the air takes place

↪ Diffusion involves the taking in of oxygen gas and releasing carbon dioxide from the body .

↪ This diffusion makes the deoxygenated blood of our body oxygenated and hence it can provide oxygen to all the tissues of the body .

↪ The tissues of our body use the oxygen brought by the RBCs to produce energy in the form of ATP .

↪ The basic function of RBC s in respiration is that it helps in transportation of gases .

↪ It forms an unstable compound called oxy-haemoglobin with oxygen which breaks to give oxygen to the tissues .

↪ It also forms carbamino-haemoglobin which breaks to give carbon dioxide to the lungs .
