So, when we use the thermometer beyond it's range, the fluid expands until it has no more room to do so. But even now, at this temperature it needs more room to expand. So, it makes more room by breaking the thermometer and flowing out. The fluid used is usually mercury or alcohol.
Working of a Clinical Thermometer
A clinical thermometer cannot be used to measure high temperatures because it has been designed to measure only human body temperature which varies over a short range. If a clinical thermometer is used to measure high temperatures, it will get damaged
