Howard Carter (9 May 1874 – 2 March 1939) was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist who became world-famous after discovering the intact tomb (designated KV62) of the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh, Tutankhamun (colloquially known as "King Tut" and "the boy king"), in November 1922.

At age 17 Carter joined the British-sponsored archaeological survey of Egypt. He made drawings (1893–99) of the sculptures and inscriptions at the terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut in ancient Thebes. He next served as inspector general of the Egyptian antiquities department. While supervising excavations in the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings in 1902, he discovered the tombs of Hatshepsut and Thutmose IV.

Carter faced many problems when he reached the mummy of King Tut. The resins used to embalm the mummy had hardened, making it difficult to take the body out of the solid gold coffin. So, he decided to place the mummy in the scorching heat to loosen the raisins. But, this did not help at all

Who was Howard Carter?

Ans :

Howard Carter was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist who became world-famous after discovering the intact tomb of the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, in November 1922.

What was his contribution?
Ans :

contributions to Egyptology: the discovery (1922) of the largely intact tomb of King Tutankhamen.

What problems did he face?
Ans:

Carter faced many problems when he reached the mummy of King Tut.  The resins used to embalm the mummy had hardened, making it difficult to take the body out of the solid gold coffin. So, he decided to place the mummy in the scorching heat to loosen the raisins. But, this did not help at all. Therefore, the body had to be cut. The cut body was then removed in parts and reassembled. The reassembled body was put in a wooden box before it was once again kept in the original place. All this took a lot of time and effort.

Later, the Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities accused Carter for damaging the mummy because of the chiseling involved.

Hope this helps you
