Question

The ratio of the present ages of father

and son is 8:1. After 10 years, the

ratio of their ages would be 10:3. The

present age of father is ?

Solution

Given:-

  • The ratio of the present ages of father and son is 8:1
  • After 10 years, the ratio of their ages would be 10:3

Find:-

  • Present age of father & son.

Explanation

Let,

  • Age of father = x years
  • Age of his son = y years.

A/c to question,

(The ratio of the present ages of father and son is 8:1)

➥ x : y = 8 : 1

➥ x/y = 8/1

➥ x - 8y = 0------------(1)

Again,

(After 10 years, the ratio of their ages would be 10:3 )

➥(x+10) : (y+10) = 10:3

➥ (x+10)/(y+10) = 10/3

➥ 3.(x+10) = 10.(y+10)

➥ 3x - 10y = 70 -------------(2)

Multiply my 3 in equ (1) and 1 in equ(2)

  • 3x - 24y = 0
  • 3x - 10y = 70

________________Sub. it's

➥(-24y+10y) = -70

➥ -14y = -70

➥y = -70/(-14)

➥ y = 5

keep value of y in equ(2)

➥ 3x - 10×5 = 70

➥ 3x = 70+50

➥3x = 120

➥x = 120/3

➥x = 40

Hence

  • Age of father = 40 years
  • Age of son = 5 years.
