Given info : 500 mL of X N HCl solution required Y mL of 0.1 N NaOH for complete neutralization and the resulting mixture yielded 14.625 g of solid NaCl by evaporation.

To find : the values of X and Y are..

solution : for complete neutralization,

equivalents of acid = equivalents of base = equivalents of salt

⇒ volume of acid × normality of acid = volume of base × normality of base = mass of salt/equivalent mass of salt

⇒ 500 ml × X  N = Y ml × 0.1 N = 14.625/58.44 = 0.25

case 1 : 500 ml × X N = 0.25

⇒ X = 0.5 N

case 2 : Y ml × 0.1 N = 0.25

⇒ Y = 2500 ml

therefore the value of X is 0.5 N and the value of Y is 2500 ml.
