so basically only 4300 people's votes were considered
the winner got 57.5%  and the other person got 42.5%
so 57.5% of 4300 is 2472.5
round it of to 2472

Answer:

The number of votes secured by the person is 2472.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : 5000 voted in an election between two candidates. 14% of the votes were invalid. The winner won by a margin approximately closer to 15%.

To find : The number of votes secured by the person?

Solution :

Total votes = 5000

Invalid votes are 14% i.e.

I=14%\text{ of } 5000

I=\frac{14}{100}\times5000

I=700

Valid votes = Total - Invalid

Valid votes = 5000-700

Valid votes V=4300

We assume that the looser got y votes and winner got x votes.

According to question,

x+y=4300 .....(1)

and x-y=15\%\text{ of } 4300

x-y=\frac{15}{100}\times4300

x-y=645 .....(2)

Solving (1) and (2) by adding them,

x+y+x-y=4300+645

2x=4945

x=\frac{4945}{2}

x=2472.5

Substitute in (1),

x+y=4300

2472.5+y=4300

y=1827.5

Therefore, The number of votes secured by the person is 2472.
