There are three main areas that need to be covered by pre-service teacher education programmes:

1. The knowledge base of the candidates

2. The ability to understand the needs of the learners

3. Imparting knowledge effectively

1. The knowledge base of the candidates- Since the programme is not a bachelor's degree in the teaching subject, but a degree in education, building the knowledge base of the candidates is not part of this stage. However, without sound knowledge, a teacher cannot impart high quality teaching. So, the teacher training/education institutions need to regularly test the candidates' grasp of the subject. This can be done by assigning projects, tasks and even asking for detailed lesson plans.

2. The ability to understand the needs of the learners- Understanding children requires being able to identify problems and get supporting evidence. It demands patience, high attention to detail and the willingness to help. All of these can only be inculcated through extensive interaction with students. Therefore, the institutions should send the candidates on teaching practice at least a few times a week, instead of just for a few classes towards the end of the session. They should be encouraged to interact with learners and even make case studies.

3.  Imparting knowledge effectively- The focus should be on the practical aspect of teaching. Candidates need to put theory into action and impart knowledge in an interactive and interesting manner, using educational props and activities. The teacher who is unable to communicate his/her knowledge to the class cannot be called a teacher, since the class has learnt nothing.

The crux of the matter is that more weightage be given to teaching practice in real life settings, rather than spending more time on theory.
