SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • A man had five children.

  • When their average age was 6 years a child was born.

TO DETERMINE

The new average (in years)

EVALUATION

Here it is given that a man had five children

Their average age was 6 years

So sum of ages

= 5 × 6 years

= 30 years

Now a child was born

So number of children = 5 + 1 = 6

Sum of ages of 6 children

= 30 + 0 years

= 30 years

Hence the required new average

\displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{Sum \:  of \:  the   \: ages }{Total \:  number  \: of  \: children } }

\displaystyle \sf{ =   \frac{30}{6}  \:  \: years}

\displaystyle \sf{ =   5\:  \: years}
