Given

5x - 3y = 14

3x - 5y = 2

To Find

Find the value of x + y

Solution

  • 5x - 3y = 14 --(i)
  • 3x - 5y = 2 ----(ii)

Multiply (i) by 3 and (ii) by 5

Now equations become

  • 15x - 9y = 42
  • 15x - 25y = 10

Subtract both the equations

→ (15x - 9y) - (15x - 25y) = 42 - 10

→ 15x - 9y - 15x + 25y = 32

→ 16y = 32

→ y = 32/16 = 2

Put the value of y in equation (ii)

→ 3x - 5y = 2

→ 3x - 5 × 2 = 2

→ 3x - 10 = 2

→ 3x = 10 + 2

→ 3x = 12

→ x = 12/3 = 4

∴ x = 4 and y = 2

Value of x + y

(x + y) = 4 + 2 = 6
