5x + 4y = 9

 =  > x =  \frac{9 - 4y}{5}  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  -  >  (i)

4x + 5y = 18

 =  > 4( \frac{9 - 4y}{5} ) + 5y = 18

 =  > 36 - 16y + 25y = 90

 =  > 9y = 54

 =  > y = 6

(i) =  > x =  \frac{9 - 4 \times 6}{5}

 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  =  >  \frac{9 - 24}{5}

 \:  \:  \:  \:  \: x =  - 3

∴x + y =  - 3 + 6 = 3
