5x + 5y = 60

5x = 60 - 5y

x = 60 - 5y/5

x=5(12 - y )/5

x=12 - y equation 1

8x - 2 y = 16

8x = 16 + 2y

x = 2 (8 + y) / 8

x = (8 + y) / 4 equation 2

putting the value of x in equation 2

x =( 8 + y )/4

12 - y = ( 8 + y ) /4

4 ( 12 - y) = 8 + y

48 - 4y = 8 + y

48 - 8 = y + 4y

40 = 5y

40/5 = y

8 = y

putting the value of y in equation 1

x = 12 - y

= 12 - 8

= 4

therefore x = 4 , y = 8
