Answer:

x = 3 and y = 2

Step-by-step explanation:

5x + 8/y = 19

3x - 4/y = 7

put 1/y = a

5x + 8a = 19 ------------(1)

3x - 4a = 7 --------------(2)

on multiply by 2 in eq 2

2(3x - 4a = 7)

6x - 8a = 14 -------------(3)

on adding eq 1 and 3

5x + 8a = 19

6x - 8a = 14

11x = 33

x = 33/11

x = 3

put x in eq 2

3x - 4a = 7

3(3) - 4a = 7

9 - 4a = 7

-4a= 7 - 9

-4a = -2

4a = 2

a = 2/4

a = 1/2

now , put 1/y = a

1/y = 1/2

y = 2
