Answer:

x = 1

y = 0

Explanation:

Given :

  • 5x - y = 5
  • 3x - y = 3

To find :

  • the value of x and y

Solution :

Consider,

5x - y = 5 _______(i)

3x - y = 3 _______(ii)

By using Elimination Method

on adding both the equation; we get;

5x - y = 5

3x - y = 3

_________

8x = 8

x = 1

Now on putting the value x = 1 on equation (ii); we get;

3x - y = 3

3(1) - y = 3

3 - y = 3

y = 3 - 3

y = 0

Therefore, the value of x = 1 and y = 0.

Know more :

In the elimination method you either add or subtract the equations to get an equation in one variable. When the coefficients of one variable are opposites you add the equations to eliminate a variable and when the coefficients of one variable are equal you subtract the equations to eliminate a variable.
