Out-groups

These are the groups to which people do not belong.

When someone in an out-group behaves rudely at someone in an in-group, the natural reaction is often to dismiss the behavior as nothing serious.

But when someone from the out-group does the same, we try to judge the behavior much more harshly.

When automatic in-group and out-group distinctions replace conscious and thoughtful reflection, we are more likely to harm each other and behave unethically.

Disadvantages:

  • Discrimination
  • Negativity

Social Identity Theory Stages introduced the concept of out-group based on people's mental processes.
