Please spend some time reflecting on what you've learned about the accidental nature of some scientific discoveries. Answer the questions below and forward them to your teacher. Each question is worth 10 points.
Have you ever come upon an idea by chance? Maybe you were making some toast and bacon and spied the peanut butter jar. That gave you the idea of making a peanut butter and bacon sandwich on toast. Or perhaps you were trying to hang something in your room, but couldn't figure out how. Later in the day, someone mentioned fishing, and you realized that fishing line was the perfect solution to hanging that decoration in your room.
Think of some of the clever, creative ideas you (or close friends or relatives) have had. Were they inspired by chance? Write about one here.
Louis Pasteur, a famous scientist, for whom pasteurized milk is named, said, "Chance favors the prepared mind."
He was referring to these "accidental" scientific discoveries when he said that. What do you suppose he meant?
