Visit to market in lockdown narrative essay
A visit to the market during the Covid lockdown days can be a strange experience. The market does not feel the same- things have changed a lot.
My usual destination used to be one of the local food joints or the stationers, but this time I was headed to the chemist who stored clinic supplies. I needed to buy weighing scales. My mother insisted that we regularly use weighing scales to know exactly how much weight we are gaining. We weren't even ordering food from outside!
The popular food joints lacked activity and wore a gloomy look. There were no customers standing in groups under the picnic umbrellas and enjoying their snacks. I too, a loyal customer, chose to ignore them and walk on ahead. I walked past some outlets that had closed down altogether, and spotted some that had recently opened up.
On normal days I would have peeped into most of the stores in the market, but the shops now open in an odd-even manner and so half of them were shut. I did not dare to pop my head into any store to say hello to the shopkeeper. I simply waved at them from a distance.
Ours is a tightly knit sector. Even in these modern times, we know almost everyone in our sector, except for some renters. So, a trip to the market is incomplete without meeting anyone known. This time however, there were hardly any people in the marketplace. The parking lot too was empty. I spotted only one known person. It was the grocer's helper, who was heading out for a delivery.
Though the visit was not an eventful one, it was nice to see the market area free of pollution. There were no overflowing bins or unnecessary honking. In fact, it was so quiet that you could well hear the birds in the evening.
