consider pythagoras theorem :

(length of ladder set against wall)² = (height of wall)² + (distance of foot of ladder from wall)²

L² = H² + D²

⇒ substitute values of L and H  in above equation:

⇒ (5m)² = (4.8m)² + D²

⇒ 25m² = 23.04 m² + D²

⇒ D² = (25-23.04)m²

⇒ D² = 1.96 m²

⇒ D =  1.4m

so distance of foot of ladder from wall is 1.4m
