A boy travels a distance of 'D' meter from his house to playground and later returns back.

We have to find the distance and displacement travelled by the boy.

Now,

Distance is defined as the length of the path travelled by an body from an initial point to the final point.

Whereas, Displacement is defined as the shortest path travelled by a body between the initial and the final positions of points.

Therefore,

Total distance travelled by the boy is (D + D) 2D m

And the total displacement by the boy is 0 m

{ As it's starting and ending points are same. }

If instead of 'D' we have given that the boy travels a distance of 15 m from his house to the playground.

Then the distance travelled by the boy = (15 + 15)m = 30 m

And the displacement = 0 m (As starting and ending points are same)

Given that,

The boy travels D meter from his home to reach to a playground.

After that, the boy returns to his home along the same path.

We need to find -

the distance and displacement travelled by the boy.

Answer ⇒

• So, we know that distance is the total length travelled by the body from its initial point to its final point.

• And, displacement refers to the shorted distance travelled by the body between its initial point and final point.

So, from here we can conclude that, the boy travelled D meter from his home to the playground and again, he travelled D meter while returning to his home to the playground.

« So, the distance travelled by the boy becomes (D + D)m = 2D metres

« Now, as the boy started from his home and also ended at the his home (i.e. the final point), so the displacement becomes 0.
