6. A shell of mass 25 kg is fired horizontally with a velocity of 15 m/s. It explodes and breaks into two pieces of 15 kg. and 10 kg. If the former is brought to rest after the explosion, determine the velocity of the later. [Ans. 37.5 m/s]

Explanation:

according to the law of conservation of momentum,

total momentum before explosion = total momentum after the explosion. _ _ _(1)

initially,

total momentum = mv

= 25 * 15

= 375 kgm/s

after explosion

total momentum = m(1)v(1) + m(2)v(2)

= 15 * 0 + 10*v(2)

= 10*v(2)

from eq(1)...

initial total momentum = final total momentum

→ 375 = 10*v(2)

→ v(2) = 375/10

→ v(2) = 37.5 m/s

hence, the velocity of the 10 kg shell is 37.5 m/s
