Given :

Electric field , E=4\times 10^5\ N/C .

Angle between field and torque , \theta=60^o .

Torque experienced , \tau=83\ Nm .

Length of dipole , l = 4 cm = 0.04 m .

To Find :

The charge on the dipole .

Solution :

We know , torque on dipole due to electric field is given by :

\vec{\tau}=\vec{P} \times \vec{E}\\\tau=PE\ sin\ \theta       ......( 1 )

Here , P is dipole moment and it is given by :

P=ql\\P=q\times 0.04

Also , sin\ \theta=sin \ 60^o=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}

Putting , value of P and E in equation 1

We get :

\tau=PE\ sin\ \theta\\83=q\times 0.04\times 4\times 10^5\times \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\\\\q=\dfrac{83}{ 0.04\times 4\times 10^5\times \dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}\\\\q=6\times 10^{-3}\ C

Therefore , charge of dipole is 6\times 10^{-3}\ C .
