suppose you throw a single coin then you can expect only two possibilities that is either head or tail now since the total probability of any set event occuring in the universe is 1 therefore similarly the event of throwing a coin will also have a total probability of 1.Now if you want no tail then you must subtract the event of occuring tail from 1 i.e 1-P(tail) to get the events that are not tail hence we call all these events as complementary events....the event of not getting a tail is the complementary event of getting a tail...
