6. Anu is four years older than Sunil. Eight years ago, Anu was three times Sunil's age.
Find the ages of Sunil and Anu.​

✳Sunil's age = 10 years.

✳Anu's age = 14 years.

SOLUTION

Let us assume that the age of Sunil = 'x' years.

Then , ∵ Anu is four years older than Sunil ,

∴ Anu's age = x + 4 years $\longrightarrow$ (1)

Then, it is said in the question that , Eight years ago, Anu was three times Sunil's age.

Eight years ago age of Sunil was = x - 8 years $\longrightarrow$ (2)

Anu's age after eight years = (x+4) - 8 = x - 4 years.$\longrightarrow$ ( 3)

∵ It is said that eight years ago, Anu was three times Sunil's age.

Anu's age after 8 years = 3(x - 8)

⇒ Anu's age after 8 years = 3x - 24 $\longrightarrow$ (4)

Now, let us equate (3) and (4) , To find  the value of x

⇒  x - 4 = 3x - 24

⇒ 3x - x = 24 - 4

⇒ 2x = 20

⇒ x = 20/2 = 10

∴ Age of Sunil (x) = 10 years.

From (1),

Anu's age = x + 4 years

⇒ Anu's age = 10 + 4 = 14years.
