Answer:

( a ) Chromatography.

( b) A procedure should be easy to follow. It should have step-by-step directions for conducting the experiment. Often it includes a sketch of how to set-up the experiment. The directions may be numbered to be sure they are done in the correct order.

( c) Chromatography

Explanation:

( a) When the water passes through the black ink it takes the pigment colors with it. Some pigments dissolve in water easier and are pulled with the water farther up the paper. This is called chromatography - separating the parts of a mixture so that you can see them one at a time. Black ink actually looks like a rainbow.

( c)

chromatography: Involves solvent separation on a solid medium. distillation: Takes advantage of differences in boiling points. evaporation: Removes a liquid from a solution to leave a solid material. filtration: Separates solids of different sizes.

a) Chromatography can be used to separate mixtures of colored compounds.  When the water passes through the black ink it takes the pigment colors with it. Some pigments dissolve in water easier and are pulled with the water farther up the paper. This is called chromatography.

b) Simple chromatography is carried out on paper. A spot of the mixture is placed near the bottom of a piece of chromatography paper and the paper is then placed upright in a suitable solvent, eg water.

As the solvent soaks up the paper, it carries the mixtures with it. Different components of the mixture will move at different rates. This separates the mixture out.

c) Mixtures that are suitable for separation by chromatography include inks, dyes, and coloring agents in food. Also, some other mixtures that can be separated by chromatography are:

  1. mixture of drugs.
  2. mixture of different colors.
  3. mixture of amino acids.
  4. mixture of plant pigments.
  5. mixture of protein molecules.
  6. mixture of antibiotics.
  7. mixture of carbohydrates.
  8. mixture of alkaloids.
  9. mixture of fatty acids.
  10. mixture of narcotics. etc
