Answer : b) Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not correct explanation of assertion .

Explanation :

Glycolysis is a common step of both aerobic and anaerobic respiration in which Glucose is converted into Pyruvic acid or Pyruvate.

It occurs in cytoplasm of the cell under the catalyst actions of some enzymes essentially made for glycolysis present in cytoplasm of the cell .

Glycolysis takes almost 10 steps to convert glucose to pyruvic acid .

The end product of glycolysis results in the net formation of 2 molecules of ATP , 2 molecules of NADH and 2 molecules of Pyruvic acid .

In the presence of oxygen , this Pyruvic acid enters citric acid cycle for production of more energy , while in absence of oxygen it undergoes fermentation .

The total molecules of ATP formed are 4 . However 2 are used up in the process of glycolysis .
