SAARC, an acronym for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is an organisation of South Asian nations established on 8 December 1985 when the government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka formally adopted its charter providing for the economic and social progress, cultural development within the South Asian region and also for friendship and cooperation with other developing nations.
It is dedicated to economic, technological, social and cultural development emphasising collective self-reliance. Originally it had seven members untill 2007 when Afghanistan joined the organisation as 8th member. It is headquartered in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.
