1) Wifi stands for wireless fidelity. WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access.

2) Wifi was launched in 1997 while WiMax in 2004.

3) Wifi can reach upto 100 metres while WiMax can reach 80-90 kms.

4) Wifi can transfer data at speeds of 54 mbps while WiMax exchange data at speeds of about 40 mbps.

5) Encryption techniques in WiMAX include Triple Data Encryption Algorithm and Advanced Encryption Standards. In Wi-Fi, encryption techniques are Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and RC4.

6) Wifi is used for household needs and short distance connections while WiMax serves a larger interoperable network.
